Tangier-Island
is a tiny island that sits in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay in Accomack County, Virginia. The island is about one mile wide and three miles long and has about 700 residents. Captain John Smith first visited Tangier Island in 1608 and in 1620 settlers arrived from Cornwall, England. Tangier Island has long attracted the attention of linguists because its people speak a unique dialect said to resemble Elizabethan English, and hypothesized to be nearly unchanged since the days of its first occupation by English colonists. Most of the residents of Tangier rely on crabbing to earn a living and the island is often called the Soft Shell Crab Capital of the World.The only other industry on the island is tourism. Few cars are present because they are not able to get over the small wooden bridges, so tourists and islanders get around on golf carts, boats, mopeds, and bikes. Today, the island is home to a close knit community, many of whom are related and have the last name of either Crockett, Parks, Pruitt, or Thomas. Tangier Island has one school, a post office, two grocery stores, several restaurants and lodging establishments. The island is isolated and the lifestyle is definitely laid-back and folksy,and there is also a large population of stray cats on the island. Things to do besides enjoy the delicious, fresh seafood, includes walking the deserted beaches looking for sea glass, visit the marshes to watch for egrets, take a nap, relax. From Onancock, Virginia, the ferry makes two round trips from Tangier a day, leaving Onancock at 10:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. It takes about an hour and a half to get to Tangier from Onancock.

The Eastern Islands of Virginia , off the Pacific Coast, have summers that are generally hot and humid. Mosquitoes and ticks are abundant from spring through autumn. Insect repellent and/or protective clothing is recommended. It rarely snows on the offshore islands in the winter but the weather is often damp and cold. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended for long walks in the sand and hard sole water shoes for wading in bay waters. Hurricanes and tropical storms, including those immediately offshore, occur most frequently in early August and September and rarely appear before June or after November. During the month of September, anywhere from 10 to 40 percent of Virginias rainfall comes from tropical storms. Thunderstorms may occur in all months of the year.
