Mathews is an unincorporated community that serves as the county seat for Mathews County along the east coast of Virginia. It's a rural area, known for its location on the Chesapeake Bay, its annual Tour De Chesapeake (due to its lack of hills except for the north section of the county near the Mathews-Gloucester border) and its local artists such as P. Buckley Moss. The County of Mathews is the second smallest county in Virginia. A visitor's center is located in the Historic Courthouse District on Main Street and is also home to the Made in Mathews Showcase and other Bay-related and historical exhibits. The third oldest lighthouse on the Bay, the New Point Comfort Lighthouse, is located at Mathews. Commissioned in 1804 by Thomas Jefferson, this 55-foot octagonal sandstone lighthouse sits on an island, separated from the mainland by a hurricane in 1933. It may be viewed by boat for from the New Point Comfort Preserve Observation Walkway. Mathews is also home to the Bay School Cultural Arts Center and the Gwynn's Island Museum. The Bethel Beach Natural Area Preserve provides 83 acres of sandy beach, low sand dunes and salt marshes on the Chesapeake Bay. It's home to rare plants, nesting birds and the endangered Northeastern Beach Tiger Beetle.

Mathews Weather & Climate

The Eastern Islands of Virginia , off the Pacific Coast, have summers that are generally hot and humid. Mosquitoes and ticks are abundant from spring through autumn. Insect repellent and/or protective clothing is recommended. It rarely snows on the offshore islands in the winter but the weather is often damp and cold. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended for long walks in the sand and hard sole water shoes for wading in bay waters. Hurricanes and tropical storms, including those immediately offshore, occur most frequently in early August and September and rarely appear before June or after November. During the month of September, anywhere from 10 to 40 percent of Virginias rainfall comes from tropical storms. Thunderstorms may occur in all months of the year.
