Yorktown
is a census-designated place in York County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the population was 220 residents. It's the county seat of York County, one of the eight original shires formed in Colonial Virginia in 1634. Named for York, a city in Northern England, it was founded in 1691 as a port for shipping tobacco. Today, it's part of the Historic Triangle of Colonial Virginia that also includes Jamestown and Williamsburg. Historic Yorktown is set on the river near the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge that spans the river to reach Gloucester Point. Historic Yorktown is comprised of several small restaurants and shops, a hotel, a park and pier. Main Street sits above Water Street on a bluff, around which the architecture is almost entirely original. The old court house, several small shops, the Nelson House, and the Yorktown Monument all sit along this road. Around the center of the town are residential streets. Colonial National Historical Park, which contains Yorktown National Battlefield and Yorktown National Cemetery, is located on the outskirts of town. Although York County has grown in recent years, very little of the growth has occurred close to Yorktown, which is becoming much more of a historical colonial village, much like Williamsburg, under the guidance of the National Park Service. Yorktown is also the eastern terminus of the TransAmerica Trail, a bicycle touring route created by the Adventure Cycling Association.

Yorktown Weather & Climate

Southeast Virginia ,along the eastern seaboard, has a mild four-season climate and the weather is generally temperate and seasonal. It is classified as humid, sub-tropical. Summers are hot and humid with cool evenings. The wettest seasons are the spring and summer, although rainfall is fairly constant year-round. The mean annual temperature is 60 °F (16 °C), with an average annual snowfall of six inches and an average annual rainfall of 47 inches. Severe weather, in the form of tornadoes, tropical cyclones, and winter storms impact the state on a regular basis. Most occur in August and September, but plenty of warning is given for these types of storms.
