Exmore
is a town in Northampton County on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The population was 1,136 residents as of the 2000 census. Exmore was once an important stop on the Eastern Shore Railroad and there are two theories on how the town got its name. Some say Exmore was named after the number of railroad stops left until reaching Cape Charles, the southernmost point of the Eastern Shore Peninsula. There were 10 more stops at this point, thus X-More." Others say it was named for Exmoor in Devon, southwest England. Settled in 1884, the town is about 35 minutes north of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel complex. It's home to a glass works shop, a wild bird store, antiques shop, a golf shop and a few other shops and restaurants. Northampton County contains the southern 35 miles of a 70-mile stretch of the Delmarva Peninsula known as "Virginia's Eastern Shore," or "The Shore," by locals. The Peninsula is between the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay, or what is known as Bayside and Seaside. Seaside, in particular, contains the largest island wilderness chain on the U.S. Eastern Seaboard. The Shore has managed to remain relatively unchanged and its beaches are in pristine condition. Attractions near Exmore include The Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge and Kiptopeke State Park. Historic towns, such Eastville and Cape Charles contain buildings that are over 350 years old, and Exmore has its' own share of historic architecture, as well.

The Eastern Islands of Virginia , off the Pacific Coast, have summers that are generally hot and humid. Mosquitoes and ticks are abundant from spring through autumn. Insect repellent and/or protective clothing is recommended. It rarely snows on the offshore islands in the winter but the weather is often damp and cold. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended for long walks in the sand and hard sole water shoes for wading in bay waters. Hurricanes and tropical storms, including those immediately offshore, occur most frequently in early August and September and rarely appear before June or after November. During the month of September, anywhere from 10 to 40 percent of Virginias rainfall comes from tropical storms. Thunderstorms may occur in all months of the year.
