Roaring-Run is the name of a hiking trail located in Botetourt County in west-central Virginia. The Roaring Run Furnace, a 19th century iron furnace on the National Register of Historic Places is also located on the trail. Signs explain furnace operation. The Roaring Run Hiking trail is excellent for the whole family and is rated easy to strenuous, depending on one's physical condition. The easy well-marked trail winds back and forth in the Roaring Run Canyon, in the mists of tall Hemlock trees, rock walls, and cascading water. The five foot bridges lets you look down into the whirling waters. Steps are placed at the steep areas. Please do not enter the water as the currents are swift and powerful. The hiking trail begins behind a large signboard, less than 50 yards from parking lot. After passing through a portion of the picnic area, the trail follows the creek to Roaring Run Falls. The trail descends through mixed forest, past Roaring Run Furnace, before crossing the creek and returning to the large signboard. Trailhead Directions are as follows: From I 81, take Exit 150 to SR 220N past Eagle rock to SR 615 (left) for 5.5 miles to SR 621 (right) for 1 mile. Roaring Run entrance is on the left. From I 64, take Exit VA 696, right onto SR 696, right onto SR 616, then a sharp left onto SR 621.

Roaring Run Weather & Climate

North Central Virginia's Piedmont Region has a humid, subtropical climate with four, distinct seasons. Heavy snows are common in the wintertime in the Piedmont region, while the rest of the state may receive only a fraction of snow. Cold air masses arriving from the Blue Ridge Mountains, especially during the winter, can lead to significant snowfall and ice storms from early November to mid-March. Thunderstorms are possible in all months of the year, but more common in the warm, humid days of summer. Although the temperature of Virginia varies according to location, it generally becomes increasingly warmer farther to the south. During the month of September, anywhere from 10 to 40 percent of Virginias rainfall comes from hurricanes and tropical storms.
