Damascus is a small town located in Washington County in southwest Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains. It's part of the Johnson City-Kingsport-Bristol, Tennessee- Virginia combined statistical area, more commonly known as the "Tri-Cities" region. The town of Damascus is home to the annual Trail Days Festival, and is known as Trail Town USA. This is due to the convergence of several scenic trails in the town, including the Appalachian Trail, the Virginia Creeper Trail, the Iron Mountain Trail, the Daniel Boone Heritage Trail and the Trans-America National Bicycle Trail. Each trail offers its own beauty, and the Virginia Creeper Trail alone has 47 bridges and trestles. Damascus is also within a short distance of hundreds of miles of other hiking, biking and horseback riding trails. The Trail Days Festival is usually held around the middle of May and draws more than 20,000 visitors each year. This makes it the largest single gathering of Appalachian Trail hikers anywhere. Other activities in the area include camping, fly-fishing, birding and golf. Damascus is also known as "the Gateway to the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area," and is quickly becoming a major tourist destination for those seeking a wilderness experience. Damascus offers shopping, great restaurants and lodging in bed and breakfast inns, cabins and cottages.

Damascus Weather & Climate

The mountainous Northeast region of Tennessee has a temperate climate with moderately cold winters and warm, humid summers. Precipitation is distributed fairly evenly throughout the year so there is no distinct wet or dry seasons. October has the least rainfall, July the most. Snowfall is variable from year to year, and some winters have relatively little. Thunderstorms occur anytime of the year, but are most frequent in spring and summer. Summer temperatures are rarely extreme, but the high humidity often makes it seem hotter than it actually is. Severe storms are infrequent in the state, being east of the center of tornado activity, south of most blizzard conditions, and too far inland to be affected by hurricanes.
